Sirs,

I tend to ignore the mischievous malevolent ramblings of this aging defrocked councillor from Benbecula (Letters 13 May). However when he refers to truths could I enlighten him re his comments on the community buyout of the North Uist estate.

The truth is that the community buyouts of land has been enthusiastically embraced in Lewis and Harris, much to the benefit of their communities who are already reaping the rewards from this process.

In South Uist great strides have been made with much more to come.

As for North Uist, we have an estate that is polluted with deer and an epidemic of Lymes disease. The community of North Uist deserve better. This estate should not be used as a rich man’s playground.

Letters: “Malevolent ramblings”

There are many more benefits in the pipeline when the distribution of Crown Estate rents devolve to the islands. Community owned estates will be the beneficiaries of this income. Privately owned estates will distribute this sum to their shareholders.

Councillors had a duty to point out the many benefits community ownership.

Another truth, Angus is that this subject has a bit to go yet and I am sure that the incoming councillors will act in the interests of their constituents.
