Hebrides News

This year’s Rally Hebrides event has been cancelled.

A significant lack of volunteers force organisers to call it off.

There was no shortage of entrants with many cars due to come from the mainland.

The non-competitive rally event, run by Lewis Car Club raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Well over £130,000 has been raised since the event began in 2008.

However, there was a “desperate need” of stage commanders, stage crew, marshalls, spectator safety personnel” and not enough people came forward to help.

Volunteer numbers “dropped drastically” to the point that a core crew could not be formed to allow the rally - planed for 1 September - to proceed.

A spokesperson said: “Rally Hebrides committee would like to officially confirm Rally Hebrides 2018 will not take place.

“Due to insufficient bodies and lack of volunteers it would be impossible to run an event like we have done so in the past.

“It has been a hard decision but we feel at this current stage it is the best one.”

They added: “We cannot thank everyone enough for the huge support that Rally Hebrides has received over the last 10 years.

“We hope after a short break we will back in August 2019.”
