A Lewis singer is celebrating after her band scooped a top folk music award.

The Mischa MacPherson Trio won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk prize at the Royal Albert Hall this week.

The group compromises singer and clarsach player Mischa from North Street, Sandwick, outside Stornoway with 19-year-old Conal McDonagh on the pipes and whistles.

Guitarist Innes White, 19, hails from the Mackenzie Sisters’ family of Lewis. He was born and went to primary school on the island before his parents - who are dentists - moved to Dingwall.

Up against impressive competition, the band was so stunned by the winner’s announcement they couldn’t move.

Mischa, who is connected to the Benbecula Macphersons, said the experience was “very exciting” but “it came as a massive shock. We were very, very surprised.”

She added: “We had really convinced ourselves we wouldn’t win and there hasn’t been a Scottish band in the winning awards for a long time.”

The 20-year-old said: “Because we were shortlisted we played on Radio 2 during the interval. Then we went back into the Royal Albert Hall and our category was announced first.

“They announced our name and its all been a bit mad since then.”

The band consider themselves lucky to have grown up surrounded by music, culture and Gaelic tradition which is rooted in the natural landscape of their home.

They all studied at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton, Wester Ross and came together in 2011 at the Feis Rois International Ceilidh Trail.

Through Feis Ross, the trio has toured top UK Folk Festivals and venues and has performed in Germany, Ireland, Romania and Australia.

They won the Danny Kyle Award 2014 in recent weeks at Celtic Connections.
