The Queen's Commonwealth Games baton has arrived on the start of its two-day tour of the Hebrides.

People gathered for an hour in the warm sunshine before Loganair’s tiny Twin Otter - flying from Glasgow - touched down on the Traigh Mhòr beach runway at  Barra airport.

The baton was making the 200 mile transit journey from Stirling on the 24th day of its tour ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Carefully clutching her precious cargo, Katie Morag, the lead character in the much loved children’s TV series of the same name, gingerly negotiated the aircraft’s steps.

Young bagpiper Claire Francis Macneil, daughter of Western Isles‘ MP, Angus Macneil, played a welcome to the baton.

Katie Morag, Cherry Campbell in real life, was appropriately wearing wellies on the sea washed sands.

On arrival, the nine-year-old told Hebrides News the experience was “exciting” not just because of handing over the baton but also the unique plane landing.

She said the baton is “very important because it carries the Queen’s message” which will be read at the games’ opening ceremony on 23 July.

Cherry added it was “special holding it” as everyone was watching and wanted to touch it.
