An islander avoided serious injury after a man came after him with a glass tumbler.

Steven Ogilvie tried to hit with it but his victim prevented it by punching the glass, shattering it.

But a shard of broken glass got into the man's eye.

Ogilvie denied the charge but was found guilty after trial at Stornoway Sheriff Court.

His lawyer, Katy Begg said it was a "serious offence."

She added, the victim will not suffer any long term damage to his eye.

She said her client's acted while under the influence of alcohol and he wanted help with his addiction which had spiraled out of control recently.

Sheriff John Halley said prison was the only option.

Ogilvie who was also convicted of a breach of bail was sentenced to a total of one year in jail, backdated to 27 April from when he was remanded in custody.
