Probe launched into care home, admissions suspended

17 March 2015

A number of concerns are being followed up by Western Isles Council.

Recently a damning report from the Care Inspectorate said Blàr Buidhe repeatedly failed to effectively respond to concerns over a 80-year-old pensioner was being neglected and not given sufficient food and water.

The elderly woman became very ill and died in hospital on August 13th last year.

Her family suggested she lost six stones in weight in the home, though the care home say the figure was 3.4 stone.

Complaint inspector Michael Watson highlighted situations where the staff did not have sufficient training and the home failed to implement its own rules.

The report stated there was evidence she was at “high risk of malnutrition” almost since she came into the facility.

Iain Macaulay, Western Isles Chief Social Work Officer, said: “Following concerns brought to my attention at the end of last year, and in light of these new issues being brought to the Comhairle’s attention, a multi-agency meeting involving all the relevant agencies has agreed that a review should be carried out to ascertain if there are underlying ongoing issues at Blàr Buidhe which require redress.

“We have acted quickly, in light of previous issues taken together with these latest concerns, by adopting a more interventionist approach, to reassure ourselves and families that there is no immediate risk to any of the residents and we are determined that the highest standards of care are in place at all residential facilities in the Western Isles.

“Families of residents are being informed of the current procedures underway.”

Residents, families or their representatives will be contacted and a report will be compiled detailing what, if any, action is required.

The process is being undertaken in line with adult protection guidelines said the council.

Admissions to the Blàr Buidhe care home in Stornoway have been suspended while a probe is ongoing, says the Comhairle.

A review into the HC One-owned facility is underway following a number of concerns raised over the dietary programmes of residents.

The operator has voluntarily stopped accepting any new residents until the investigation is over.
