Pristine report for island hospital     30/8/14

The Uist and Barra Hospital has received a glowing report over its cleanliness and infection control standards.

The Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) also praises the ‘excellent’ communication’ between staff groups as well as the positive feedback from patients.

The HEI checked the hospital in Balivanich on two days in July.

Susan Brimelow, HEI Chief Inspector, said: “This was a positive inspection. We found a high standard of cleanliness throughout the hospital and saw good compliance with standard infection control precautions.

“We noted excellent communication between staff groups and patients commented positively on the standards of cleanliness on their wards. This inspection resulted in no requirements and one recommendation.”

The report said all staff within the hospital demonstrated a good understanding of their responsibilities in terms of maintaining a clean hospital and preventing the spread of infection.

Inspectors found a ‘very good’ team approach throughout the hospital.

They said staff used effective procedures to help prevent the spread of infection.

Staff regularly washed their hands and complied with hand hygiene practices.

The report highlighted the “excellent” communication between staff groups at the hospital.

Patients spoken to during the inspection also responded with positive feedback.

NHS Western Isles Chief Executive, Gordon Jamieson, said: “This extremely positive report is testament to the staff of Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh and their continuous efforts to ensure that the environment for patients is up to the highest possible standard.
