MSP Alasdair Allan has praised the work of the emergency services, power companies and others in the Western Isles, following a series of the storms and gales.

Alasdair Allan said: “The weather conditions which hit the Western Isles from Thursday night onwards have been extreme by any standards, with gusts of 113 mph recorded in Stornoway.”

“This has caused structural damage, including the loss of power to a great many areas at different times.

The MSP continued: “It is worth recording people’s appreciation of the work done through the night, often in terrible conditions, by everyone striving to restore electricity supplies.”

“It is clear that the police, coastguard, power companies, the Comhairle, home carers, the NHS and many others have been working together closely to ensure that the most vulnerable people are cared for. I would like to express my own thanks to them for what they are presently doing.”

He added: “While we are used to bad winter weather in the islands, it is important to stress that this incident has been fairly exceptional. It is to the credit of our public services and to people throughout the islands that the community has been so resilient in tackling these problems.”
