Many thousands of islanders were without electricity as a severe gale and lightning strikes affected the Western Isles.

Gusts of 84mph were officially recorded on South Uist though wind speeds of 96mph were experienced at a home weather station in Ness, Lewis last night.

The lights went off as the band of high winds moved northwards.

Parts of Uist lost power for a period last night but were later reconnected.

Lewis was extensively hit with powerlines down including the Stornoway, Carloway Laxdale, Back, Lochs, Westside and Ness areas.

Parts of Harris were also affected. The Ardhasaig to Huisinish area were still without electricity this morning.

Hydro engineers are continuing to work in challenging conditions to restore people who are still without electricity with the aim to have all customers back on supply today.

Across the north of Scotland, hydro engineers restored the power to more than 12,000 customers during the night.

Engineers worked late into the night and started at first light to restore power and to assess any damage caused by the storm.

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution said

its "continuous programme of investment to make the network resilient meant it stood up well to the high winds and lightning strikes in the first storm of the year.”
