Many families in the Western Isles are without electricity tonight (Wed) as hydro engineers battled to repair power lines damaged by a violent storm.

Over the last 24 hours lightning knocked out many parts of the network.

Powerlines between Tarbert and down the Bays of Harris are still affected.

Serious faults also hit the Lochcarnan district of South Uist.

Lightning damaged powerlines as well as the phone system in Griminish, Benbecula.

Restoring supplies in villages between Bunavoneader and Husinish in north Harris is a complex operation.

A spate of localised faults meant hundreds of homes were still without electricity over the day.
