A rest centre has been set up at Leverburgh Care Home to provide the local community without power with the option of accessing refreshments and a warm environment until electricity supplies are fully restored to the area.

 

SSE intends to transport a catering wagon over to Harris on the ferry tomorrow along with additional hydro staff and equipment.

 

The utility firm has also contracted Hotel Hebrides in Tarbert to provide hot food to residents without power tonight.

 

Some 800 homes in South Harris including the Bays of Harris area are facing another night without electricity after fierce winds badly damaged power lines.

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) engineers have been working all day to restore power to several parts of the Western Isles.

 

Ongoing repair work will be undertaken on Sunday by hydro engineers to reconnect remaining properties.

 

SHEPD (Scottish Hydro) is leading on the provision of support for vulnerable service users. They can be contacted on 0800 300 999.

 

The Comhairle and police would ask family, neighbours and friends living nearby to assist and support elderly and vulnerable people.
