Hydro engineers hope to restore electricity supplies to homes cut off during last nights storm.

Thousands of islanders suffered powercuts as fierce winds and debris smashing into overhead lines caused faults.

Wind speeds reached 90mph or over at the height of the storm.

Thousands of people in the Western Isles were reconnected within hours. Many are still without electricity though they should be reconnected later today.

In Barra, properties around Borve have been off since yesterday afternoon.

Lochmaddy and nearby districts lost supplies in the evening.

Houses on the Lochs Road, outside Stornoway, and in Balallan are also affected

Engineers working to get the power back on in Seilebost, Scarista, and Leverburgh.

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution said it was well prepared for the possibilities of power being lost to customers in the area and mobilised several hundred front line and support staff to repair damage to the network, handle calls and update customers on its Priority Services Register.

It’s anticipated that power will be restored to all customers affected by the recent adverse weather by the end of this afternoon.

Rodney Grubb, Head of Operations, said: “We were well prepared for the high winds and took the opportunity to move engineers to the areas we knew would be affected.

“Our network has stood up well to this latest weather event and we expect all of our customers to be back on power by later today.”

The company’s most vulnerable customers will be called to be offered a priority service.
