Island community groups have been awarded cash funding to help out during severe powercuts.

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution’s (SHEPD) Resilient Communities Fund aims to aid projects that protect the welfare of vulnerable customers when the electricity network is down for a lengthy period because of storm damage.

Uist Radio will use its £15,000 grant to purchase a FM receiver/ transmitter, generators and rechargeable radios to broadcast when the mains power is out.

Some £6,250 has been awarded to the Bays of Harris Trust which runs the community centre at Leacklea for a generator, food flasks, battery-powered lights and radios as well as satellite internet.

 

Bethesda Care Home in Stornoway is to receive £3,886 to provide an emergency electricity supply.

 

The Bernera Community Association which operates the island's community centre was awarded £3,437 for a diesel-powered generator and space heaters.
