A powerboat owner from Lewis has set two new water speed records this week.

Seumas Macleod from Uig, Lewis, set the first British record for the fastest small RIB powerboat in the outboard pneumatics class on inland waters.

He followed that up by breaking the world record speed, achieving 70.1mph.

The previous record was held by Jesus Aledo of Spain for 67.47mph set in 2007.

Seumas took part in the 751 to 870cc class with his Ceasar Thundercat inflatable catamaran powered by an 850cc Yamaha outboard engine.

His record breaking feats have been officially recorded by adjudicators during the Coniston Powerboats records week event.

Each year powerboats of all sizes and all classes from around the globe gather at Coniston Water. Drivers take turns on the water to attempt to break the British and world water speed record in their section.

Perfect conditions on Lake Coniston on Monday saw Seumas and his co-driver Martin Jerome establishing the British record for his class of boat, achieving an average speed of 62.79mph over two timed runs over a one kilometre course.

As the week progressed, many different combinations of propellers and engine positions were trialled, in an attempt to increase the average speed.

In calm conditions on Thursday, Seumas broke the 2007 world record with an average speed of 67.83mph.

More trials took place yesterday (Fri) and, after making final adjustments to cylinder head, jets and timing, Seumas and Martin attempted the course again.

They amazingly achieving the exact same average speed of 69.99 mph on each of two runs.

On their last test it was announced Seumas achieved an even higher speed of 70.10 mph - which now becomes the fastest speed in the world and in Britain for that boat category.

Seumas said he is very grateful to his sponsors who made this achievement possible.

His parents are Murray and Janet Macleod of Uigean. His father runs the Seatrek boat trip operation.

Organisers said new records will be submitted for ratification by the world and relevant national governing body.
