Post Office workers plan to strike next Thursday over cuts to jobs, services and pensions.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) said a programme of cutbacks would mean 2,000 job losses and reduced pensions.

The union's general secretary, Dave Ward, said: "The Post Office is at crisis point and the government has to step in.”

He added: “The Post Office has pointed to the bottom line in making these cuts. But it cannot pretend that using public money to pay off staff so they can be replaced with minimum wage jobs is a success story or that closing down its flagship branches is a defence of the service.”

The Post Office was "disappointed" by the call for industrial action but said people working in 97% of branches will not be involved

It said it has contingency plans ready to minimise disruption.

Kevin Gilliland, Post Office’s network director, said: "We will also work hard to minimise any disruption to customers in our 300 Crown branches should they be affected by strike action.”
