Howmore Post Office is set to move again, with another cut to operating hours.

The service in the Middle District of South Uist was dramatically reduced in 2011 when the branch was relocated.

After operators John and Liz Brant retired the post office shifted to Cothrom in Orniclate, nearly four miles away.

Opening times were slashed to just four hours a week.

Now, it will be be down to just three hours weekly if the latest proposal to operate out of Stoneybridge Hall is approved.

Post Office Ltd said the core postmaster has identified an opportunity to move the service into the new premises.

Area manager, Kenny Lamont, said the community centre is “located more centrally within the community, approximately 2.5 miles from the current location.

“In order to provide a sustainable service to our customers, it is important that the service is feasible for our operator.

“We believe that the move and reduction of opening hours is the best possible solution to allow us to maintain a Post Office service in the longer term, having looked at a range of information specific to the local area before putting our plans into consultation.”

A public consultation runs until 19 May.
