Portugal torture trial                                                   19/3/12

A Lewis man accused of being involved in the kidnapping and attempted murder of a fellow Scot in Portugal will face trial on 28 March.

Calum Macleod, 45, from Back, Lewis, is one of five Brits held in custody in Algrave over his role in the alleged attacks on James Ross of Wick, Caithness.

It is claimed the 28-year-old father of two was held against his will for 13 days and had an ear, finger and toes chopped off in Algarve in 2010 after he apparently went there with the promise of work to pay off a £9, 000 drugs debt.

Calum Macleod was arrested in October 2010, and, along with four other Brits  -  Steven Johnson from Manchester;  Terence Macgurk and Ronnie Rose from the Midlands as well as  William Quinn - has been held in custody since. They all deny the charges.

The trial will be held in the city of Loulé to the south of the county where the alleged attempted murder is said to have occurred.

Northern Constabulary had instigated a joint operation with the Policia Judiciaria and the assistance of the UK SOCA over the case.
