Police close Bràighe due to storm surge
3 February 2025
The Bràighe roadway in Lewis was closed by police for a period earlier due to wild
weather.
Waves and spray overtopping the sea wall combined with the risk of shingle and debris
being flung onto the carriageway promoted the closure.
The Bràighe is the only route between Point and Stornoway.
Police Scotland said: “The A866 isthmus, the Braighe, crossing from Point to the
rest of the Isle of Lewis is closed due to the wind and high tide.”
The tide came in earlier than its 10am prediction time and rose to a larger peak
due to a storm surge effect from this morning’s weather factors.
The backlog of traffic started moving again on a single file convey when the tide
receded sufficiently.
