Police reinforcements required after couple turned nasty        22/1/12

A Lewis couple turned on police officers who were responding to an alleged claim of rape.

Paula Christie, 41, and Christopher Maclean, 50, both of 6 Doune Road, Bragar, Lewis, appeared for sentencing at Stornoway Sheriff Court this week.

Maclean previously admitted assaulting two constables by struggleing and attempting to punch and kick them. He had also accepted he had made violent verbal threats .

Christie previously pleaded guilty to obstructing the two police officers as well as a second charge of grabbing a third constable by her hair.

Fiscal David Teale said police attended to reports of a serious incident and went into the house where both householders were affected by alcohol.

The court was told Maclean robustly told officers to get out of his house. He said he would kill them and pushed them away.

When police tried to handcuff him, Christie jumped between them to try and prevent him from being cuffed.

The fiscal said a violent struggle ensued with Maclean lashing out with his arms and feet.

The police called for urgent back-up and there was  seven minute struggle to get Maclean handcuffed.

Christie continued to attempt to get Maclean released and challenged officers to a fight.

When reinforcements arrived, she pulled one officer’s hair before being brought to the ground herself and handcuffed.

Her lawyer highlighted that Christie was adamant she never made  the initial call. He said that some unknown person had cloned their phone number and used it to “make trouble.” Some five false calls were made by the third party since October, he stressed.
