You’re tweeted: police on 24-hour twitter report    17/2/14

Police in the Western Isles are to tweet every incident over a 24-hour period to show what they have to deal with on a typical weekend.

Using a Twitter feed to report the kind of callouts handled across the islands aims to give the public an idea of the varied workload of officers.

In not more than 140 characters, all incidents - ranging from emergencies to reports of vandalism, missing people and brawls - will be reported as they happen on the social network site from Friday night into Sunday morning.

Most police forces flag up a handful of incidents on their internet pages, the Western Isles will be the first known area in Scotland to give a ‘day-in-the-life’ view on their police twitter page in this way.

Western Isles Area Commander, Chief Inspector Gordon Macleod, said: “We want to give the public an insight into the modern day policing of the Western Isles.

“We already use our page for appeals, traffic information, weather warnings and display some of the work our officers do within the community.”

“Between Friday 21st and Sunday 23rd February, our page will show real time activity from emergencies and crimes committed to random callouts.”
