A scaled-down event will temporarily replace the hugely popular Point agricultural show this summer.

The main attraction cannot proceed due to serious storm damage to its venue.

However, a family fun day with a range of stalls and attractions plus a horse show and dog show will go-ahead, offering plenty to see and do on the day.

Hurricane force winds on January 9th battered the crumbling building at the showground, ripping its roof off and allowing heavy rain to flood inside.

Now the former Aird School in Point - which is owned by Western Isles Council and leased to Urras Storas an Rubha (Point Trust) for community development - may have to be knocked down.

The Point Show committee said the building cannot be used.

The premises provided an essential dry weather venue as well as hosting the competitions for arts, crafts, fruit and vegetables, jams, home baking and knitting. The livestock events are also cancelled.

Instead, family fun day will be hosted at the Aird showground.

Iain Nicolson of Point Agricultural Society explained: “The buildings at Aird School were substantially damaged during the storm in early January.

“The council and Urras Storas an Rubha (Point Trust) are waiting on estimates and a survey to decide whether to repair or demolish the school.”

He highlighted: “Whatever the outcome the school buildings will certainly not be available to the show this year.

“As a consequence the Point Show committee has regretfully decided not to have an agricultural show this year.

“There will however be a family fun day, with the usual attractions and mixture of charity and commercial stalls.

“The horse show and dog show will go ahead as part of the fun day as they are self-governing.

He said the show committee is “dedicated to continue with an agricultural show and is planning for a full show in 2016 regardless of school access.”

The family fun day takes place on Saturday 11 July.
