The three Point councillors are the first independent candidates to announce that they will be standing for election to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in the forthcoming Council elections.
Pledging to continue working together as a team, the councillors, Donald John Macsween, Norman M Macleod and Donald Nicholson, say they are standing on their successful record over the past five years.
Cllr Donald John Macsween said: “I and my fellow Point Councillors regard it as a privilege to represent the people of Point.
“We worked hard to secure Sgoil an Rubha and the community development that has flowed from that success. We are determined to build on that by working together for the benefit of Point and the wider Western Isles.”
He added: “Whilst we naturally hold differing views on some issues we have never let that get in the way of working together and we are determined to do so again, if the people do us the honour of choosing us to be their representatives on the Comhairle.”
Cllr Norman Macleod said: “We recognise that we face a serious political challenge at the next election but we share the view that the independence of Councillors is vital. We do not wish, nor do we believe it is in the best interests of the people of Point or the Western Isles, to be in thrall to any political party or government.”
Cllr Donald Nicholson stated: “I have served on the Comhairle for the past 22 years and I believe that experience will be of benefit to the people of Point and the Western Isles. The next term of the Comhairle is going to be extremely challenging given the difficult economic circumstances we face.
“This will not be a time for inexperience and local party political experiments. I hope the electors will give me and my fellow independent Councillors the opportunity to continue to serve them in the best way that we can.”
The Council elections are due to be held on the 3rd May 2012.
