An emergency alert was declared when a small plane suffered engine problems during a flight from Wick to Iceland on Sunday evening.

The twin-engined Cessna with two people onboard diverted for Stornoway airport where airfield fire crews had mustered by the runway.

The Point road was closed for a period as the light aircraft approached to land.

The RNLI lifeboat launched and stood-by in Broadbay - by the northern end of the runway - in case the plane ditched into the water.

Fire tenders from Stornoway and Shawbost were summoned as well as police, coastguards and ambulance personnel.

The plane landed safely around 7.15pm. None of the two onboard were injured.
