An island plane was caught up in one of the electrical storms which raged over the north of Scotland this week.

A Loganair freight aircraft carrying a cargo of Christmas mail couldn’t land at Stornoway airport on Wednesday due to thunder and lightning, said the airline.

Loganair said it was forced to return to Inverness.

It successfully tried again when the lighting threat later subsided.

Lightning struck 5,000 times across the Western Isles and northern Scotland over Wednesday and Thursday, according to electricity supplier, SSE.

Lighting bolts hitting powerlines blacked out the entire Western Isles for hours on both days.
