Four hurt as plane aborts take-off and veers off runway

2 January 2015

Four people were hurt when a plane veered off a runway at speed and careered along a stretch of grasslandat Stornoway airport today.

Shaken passengers described the terrifying moments when the tail end of the aircraft “slid about” as if on ice just moments before it crashed on the grass, well off the hard tarmac.

The Loganair Saab 340B plane was two thirds full with islanders and visitors - including a girl under two years - returning to the mainland after celebrating the New Year with family on Lewis.

The plane was speeding down the airfield’s main runway to take off when the incident occurred just after 8.30am.

The route would have seen the plane taking off and flying over the main Stornoway to Point road.

The aircraft’s nose ploughed into the soft ground bringing it to a sudden stop with a jolt.

Some 29 people including two pilots and a stewardess were onboard the Glasgow-bound flight at the time.

Airport fire appliances were at the scene immediately with back-up crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in Stornoway.  Ambulances and police cars raced to the airport.

Two men onboard the Loganair-owned plane suffered injuries and were taken to the accident and emergency department at the Western Isles Hospital three miles away for treatment.

They are believed to have hurt their back and arm.

They were later discharged, police said.

Two females were also injured - understood to be knocks and bruises - but declined medical treatment.

A full air accident probe has been launched with an investigation team from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch is believed to have to have flown from Glasgow to the airport at 3pm.

Police guarded the scene and passengers’ luggage remains in the aicraft’s hold tonight.
