Plan to build large development of 160 new homes on outskirts of Stornoway

Proposals to build a new housing development at Sandwick some two miles outside of Stornoway have been announced by Hebridean Housing Partnership (HHP)..

The site on farm land beside Mackenzie Park estate is called Melbost West by HHP - a reference to its location on Melbost Farm.

Affordable housing is proposed for the site and could be a combination of both social rent and shared equity (affordable home ownership) properties.

Frontage of the new estate will face Parkend Industrial Estate while the houses would be erected in four phases running in a northerly direction across two fields from the main road.

Some 160 semi-detached homes are earmarked in total.

Under proposed design plans, a new roundabout could replace the current Mackenzie Park junction while there’s a plan to create a bus turning area at the top end. Space for a children’s play park could be allocated within the scheme.

The proposal also includes the provision a small retail space for the potential construction of a shop or similar development.
