Trading Standards at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are warning islanders of a telephone scam targetting the Western Isles.

The caller states the victim’s bank is under investigation and needs to move their money to a different account.

The caller then gives a sort code and account number to enable the transfer.

The phone call sounds genuine and underlines the need to act urgently.

Part of the instructions are not to disclose the information with anyone including bank staff.

A council spokesperson said: “ This is a scam. A banking institution will not contact you in this manner.

“Our advice is to hang up, wait five to 10 minutes and call your bank on the legitimate phone number printed on your bank statements.”
