EE has drafted engineers onto Barra to replace aging and failing equipment on mobile phone masts in an attempt to finally resolve the signal problems which has plagued the island for most of this year.

The mast on South Uist which feeds a microwave signal to the Barra network should also have new equipment installed after the team commences work on Tuesday.

Engineers are to fix the problem mast and will then investigate all sites to help prevent this issue occurring elsewhere in the future

An EE spokesperson said: “Resolving the signal issues on the Isle of Barra is our top priority and as the only mobile operator to offer both voice and data services to the area, we take our responsibility very seriously.

The solution for the Isle of Barra requires the full replacement of critical equipment.

"We’ve worked with a number of suppliers to fast track the process and all teams are in place to work on the site this week to return service to the area as soon as possible.

"We’re sincerely sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
