Petition against 15% energy bill surcharge       11/11/14

A petition - signed by 1,150 of islanders protesting against a 15% electricity bill surcharge - was presented to SSE representatives when they discussed the row with Western Isles Council and Western Isles Poverty Action Group in Stornoway.

John Maciver, of the Western Isles Poverty Action Group, said: “The issue is the Western Isles, and the Highlands and Islands in general, are paying two pence per unit more for electricity than the rest of Scotland.

He said it was important to tackle the surcharge issue as the Western Isles has the highest rate of fuel poverty in western Europe.

“He stressed: “It is imperative that SSE does something about the issue. In fact, there is a moral imperative.”

He said it was too early to say the surcharge would be abolished but indicated SSE was willing to look at possible solutions.

Mr Maciver said: “They are making fairly positive noises but are no firm commitments at the moment.”

SSE says it wants the grid infrastructure transmission costs to be flattened out so that there is one standard charge for every customer across the country.
