A man whose body was found after a major land and sea search has been formally named.

Thomas Tyrrell from Tong, Lewis, was wearing a lifejacket when his body was recovered from the sea off Sheshader, Point, early on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Tyrrell, said to be in his late 60s, perished after setting off alone in his three-metre long homemade boat (pictured above) from Broadbay on Tuesday morning.

His destination was unknown and the boat was without a VHF radio or mobile phone.

Weather and sea conditions deteriorated during his voyage.

A major search - involving around 40 members of the emergency services - was launched on Tuesday night.

The following afternoon, the man’s homemade boat was discovered submerged off Sheshader. It is understood the vessel has since sunk.  His body was later found nearby.

A statement from the Tyrrell family read: “We confirm that our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Thomas Tyrrell was found deceased following a land and sea search.

“We would like to point out that Thomas had and was wearing his life jacket when found.”

The family thanked “all emergency services – coastguard, RNLI, Hebrides Search and Rescue team (Hebrides MRT) and police for their efforts and for finding Thomas.”
