The new North Harris Free Church has appointed its first minister.

The church was recently formed by the breakaway congregation of Tarbert Church of Scotland in Harris.

About a third of the congregation voted to quit the denomination in protest of the decision to allow gay ministers and the departure from Biblical teaching.

About a third of the congregation voted to quit the denomination in protest of the decision to allow gay ministers and the departure from Biblical teaching.

The Free’s recent decision to drop its traditional ban on music and hymns in worship is seen as a factor in attracting the dissenting worshippers.

New minister Rev David Macleod has also left the Church of Scotland. The 40-year-old previously served in Lochcarron.

He and his wife Mairi have three young children.

The North Harris Free congregation has no church building of its own. Sunday worship is in Tarbert Community Centre.
