A breakaway congregation in Lewis is set to get its first minister.

Stornoway High Free Church has grown in numbers following a split in the High Church of Scotland last year.

Some 250 worshippers left the Matheson Road congregation in April 2014 in protest of the Church of Scotland’s decision to allow gay ministers and the departure from Biblical teaching.

Initially meeting as a fellowship, the growing group joined the Free Church of Scotland.

Now Rev Hugh Ferrier has accepted a call from the congregation.

A date for his induction has yet to be set.

Mr Ferrier grew up in Alness, attending Invergordon Academy.

He graduated with a degree in Biblical Studies from St Andrews University before a further three years at the Free Church College in Edinburgh.

During his time as a Free Church student, he had placements at Leith, Barvas, Helmsdale, Thurso and other north coast congregations.

He was licensed for the ministry by the Northern Presbytery in June 2012.

The Stornoway High Free is still without a permanent home.

Regular Sunday services - in Gaelic and English - are held in the Stornoway Primary while mid-week prayer meetings are hosted in the Lewis Retirement Centre.

The congregation hopes to build a modern community church in Stornoway.
