The introduction of parking charges at Stornoway Airport are being slammed by politicians

A flat rate of £3 per day will commence in the early summer.

Blue badge holders will be charged for their cars at the same price as other drivers.

Labour MSP Rhoda Grant said airfield operator Hial should have consulted with the island communities.

She pointed out the move “seems to fly in the face” of the Air Discount Scheme which is designed to encourage islanders to make use of air travel.

She added: “We are supposed to be doing all we can to maintain and encourage people to come to our islands.

Islanders working a two week shift offshore may now pay upwards of £42 to park their car at the airport, she said.

Conservative MSP Donald Cameron said:

I am concerned at the proposed changes to parking charges by HIAL and in particular the fact that it appears to have been carried out with little to no consultation with the public.

“I understand the need for HIAL airports to have a sound business model, but it is completely understandable that people who use the airport regularly will be taken aback by this announcement.

“I am particularly concerned that blue badge holders will be charged at the same rate as able drivers, and I would urge HIAL to review this.”
