A retired Free Church of Scotland minister is offering a £20,000 reward to help find his daughter who went missing over 30 years ago.

Alison MacDonald from Back, Lewis, was 19 when she disappeared in the Kashmir region of India whilst on holiday with a friend in August 1981.

A former customs officer in Lewis, Rev Kenny MacDonald and his wife Reta hopes the money – taken from their life savings – will help uncover information leading to his daughter’s safe return.

Mr Macdonald was known as Kenny Sgitheanach when he played for Back football club.  The couple now live in Golspie.

Alison - who would now be 53 years old - was raised in Lewis and attended the Nicolson Institute before going to study at Aberdeen University.

Mr MacDonald explained: “We thought it was worth trying.

“When she first disappeared we offered £7,000 as a reward and it produced some leads but none of them led to Alison.

“We have been reluctant since to offer a cash reward because it might attract the wrong person.

“But we have now decided to use our family savings as part of using every means possible to find Alison.”

The 80-year-old added: “We have a reconstruction of how we think Alison looks now.

“I am willing to travel to India or wherever to find her. I am sure she is still alive and I pray that I will be able to see Alison again one day, hopefully soon.”

The MacDonald family have tirelessly campaigned to try and discover what happened to their daughter, and have made 17 trips to the region as the search continues.

Alison went missing while backpacking with a friend in India. The two women were staying at Sonamarg, 9000ft up the Himalayas, but had temporarily parted company, with Alison’s friend going on a two-day excursion to view a glacier.

Alison went for a walk and was last seen buying apples from a trader. Her clothes and rucksack were found in her room. Because they could find no clues, Kashmiri police closed the case.
