Pair in court over waterwheel offence          23/7/14

The community-owned waterwheel building in the Lews Castle grounds was broken into and a statue vandalised, Stornoway Sheriff Court was told.

Two island youths previously convicted for their involvement in an incident at the location have been sentenced.

Ryan Macdonald, 20, of 13 Cearn Chillegraidh, Stornoway, admitted acting with an accomplice and breaking into the premises with the intent to steal.

Shaun Maciver, 17, of 12 Cearn Shiaraim, Stornoway, was convicted of damaging a statute and other items.

Both were sentenced to a community payback order and ordered to undertake 100 hours of unpaid community service work.

Each was given 18 months to pay £500 compensation.

They were both tagged and placed on a 9pm to 6am curfew for Friday and Saturday nights.
