The collective voice of the Church of Scotland in Lewis has urged the Comhairle to save its overnight carer service.

The council would save £180,000 over the next two years if it axes the service where a visiting carer tends to an individual in the middle of the night.

A replacement service is anticipated for a small number of individuals need the service to provide a safe level of care. Without this service, it is "probable that residential care could be the only alternative," with potential pressures upon the already heavily subscribed services, highlights a council report.

Lewis Presbytery of the Church of Scotland, implored the council not to make any cuts in the service.

Rev Hugh M Stewart, social care convener, of the presbytery said: "While recognising the difficult decisions faced by the Comhairle in the current financial climate, the Presbytery urges the Comhairle to protect the most vulnerable in our society by safeguarding the valuable service provided by its dedicated team of overnight carers.

"In Presbytery's view, this essential service should be safeguarded in order to enable more people to stay in their own homes safely and to reduce strain on hospital and residential care provision."
