Concerns with the out-of-hours GP service in Harris have been highlighted after a seriously ill patient was left without medical attention.

The incident is set to be raised at a public meeting arranged for Monday night in Tarbert.

NHS 24 promised a 74-year-old man from the Stockinish area that a nurse based at the Stornoway hospital would visit him at home in Stockinish in an hour

They even clarified his address, querying if he lived near Carloway in Lewis during the call on Sunday night.

After midnight, the patient received a phone message back saying the nurse's visit was cancelled.

An ambulance was summoned when the pensioner was diagnosed with appendicitis when he attended the Tarbert GP surgery the following morning.

He was rushed to the Stornoway hospital for surgery.

Later in the week, he was flown by ambulance plane for specialist treatment in Inverness.

NHS Western Isles said it would not comment on specific cases.
