Call for Osborne to cut petrol prices 5/3/14
The Scottish National Party has welcomed calls from campaigners to cut petrol and diesel duty ahead of Chancellor George Osborne’s budget this month, but has warned their proposed cut of three pence would not help rural areas where forecourt prices are often higher than in towns and cities.
The FairFuel UK campaign led by former Top Gear presented Quentine Wilson found the UK now has the highest duty on diesel in the EU and is behind only Sweden for petrol taxes.
SNP Westminster spokesperson for Transport Angus MacNeil MP said: “More needs to be done to ensure people in rural areas are not hit at the petrol pumps.
“For many, a car is not a luxury but a necessity to get to work or access public services. The UK’s excessively high petrol and diesel prices are hitting households and businesses alike.
“The SNP have consistently called for the introduction of a fuel duty regulator which is a simple and effective way to get price stability for all motorists.
