With ex-hurricane Ophelia approaching next week, Barra ferry passengers are advised to consider making their journey before the severe weather sets in.

Ophelia risks causing danger to life and property when it slams into the south of Ireland around lunchtime on Monday.

Some forecasts show the northward low taking a track up the Minch. The storm is set to bring strong winds - possibly violent gusts - and heavy seas to the Western Isles and west coast.

Uist and Barra may experience hurricane force winds according to the United States National Hurricane Center.

Adverse conditions could continue into Thursday with the strong likelihood of disrupting ferries.

Cal Mac said: “We're expecting high winds to cause disruption across our network next week. Please check ahead before travelling.”

The Castlebay and Lochboisdale services have already been placed on yellow alert.

The shipping firm recommends people travelling the Castlebay -Oban route to sail on Sunday.

The Loti intends to run ahead of the incoming weather on Monday afternoon by bringing forward her Mallaig departure time by seven hours.

Her skipper may depart early on both sailings and travellers are urged to turn up on time to prevent the risk of being left behind.

Ferries to other Western Isles ports are liable to be affected and ship captains are scrutinising updated forecasts.
