A 17,000 tonne oil rig has run aground in stormy seas at Dalmore on the west coast of Lewis.

The drilling platform, Transocean Winner, is being pounded by waves on the shore by Dalmore cemetery.

It was blown ashore after breaking her tow in a north west gale in the early hours on Monday.

Fuel fumes from the rig can be smelt in the air on land. Police are cordoning off the area.

There is a serious risk of pollution if the rig is damaged by the heavy waves crashing into it.

Salvage tugs are being commissioned to attempt to pull her off.
