The delayed operation to load the Transocean Winner onto a heavy lift ship has reached an advanced but crucial stage.

The stricken 17,600 tonne structure is being cautiously positioned over the semi-submerged heavyloader vessel, the Hawk, in Broad Bay, Lewis.

The rig is being manoeuvred between guide poles on the 55-metre wide deck of the Hawk.

Later on Thursday, the ship is due to commence pumping out ballast water to lighten herself and rise out of the water with the rig left high and dry as deck cargo.

A decision will be made later whether to wait until daybreak tomorrow for the final part of the loading - when the holed tanks on the rig come out of the water.

Last night, the rig was detached from her eight anchors in Broad Bay where she has been located after being salvaged off the Dalmore shore where she ran aground in a storm on 8 August.

Four small tugs towed her to the Hawk at the mouth of the bay this morning.

The float-on and positioning commenced around 10am.
