Energy regulator Ofgem has launched an investigation into SSE’s pre-payment meter processes.

Ofgem said it follows concerns that SSE may not have been treating its customers fairly when switching them to the more expensive meter tariffs where they had to pay up front, particularly people in vulnerable situations.

The probe will examine whether SSE breached Ofgem’s standards of conduct.

It will try to establish if the supplier provided appropriate information, and ensure consumers’ ability to pay when suggesting alternative payment methods.

Electricity firms are obliged to offer people having difficulty in paying the right to have charges deducted from social security benefits or to pay by regular instalments.

A SSE spokesperson said: "We are committed to treating all our customers fairly and will be cooperating fully with Ofgem's investigation into this historic issue."
