Islander made nuisance 999 calls when drunk       9/5/14

An islander who repeatedly makes nuisance calls to the emergency services when drinking received an alcohol ban when sentenced in court yesterday (Fri).

Andrew Macdougall, 46, of 24 Calabhaidh, Lochboisdale, South Uist, previously pleaded guilty to two charges of phoning police and ambulance services unnecessarily.

Procurator fiscal David Teale told the court on one day he made eight nuisance calls to the emergency services.

Lawyer Angus Macdonald said Macdougall had a number of similar convictions.

He said: “When he get drunk he seems to make an issue of phoning the emergency services.”

Sheriff David Sutherland banned Macdougall from drinking alcohol for two years including the obligation to be spot tested. He required him to undergo alcohol abuse treatment.

The sheriff also imposed a 24 month payback order and ordered him to undertake 200 hours on unpaid community service work.

Sheriff David Sutherland warned: “Given the history here, any breach is likely to mean you simply go to jail.”
