A northerly gale is prolonging the chilly conditions across the Western Isles.

Winds speeds may peak around 50mph in exposed areas in South Uist and Barra tonight.

Showers of rain, hail or sleet - heavy at times in some locations - are also expected.

Black ice on roads, pavements and paths is a risk as low temperatures means wet roads are likely to freeze.

Heavy showers in parts of the islands will wash grit off roads and pathways leaving them liable to be slippery.

Strong winds will moderate overnight but conditions are still expected to be blustery on Friday morning though icy surfaces present a hazard.

Rain showers are expected to persist in South Uist and Barra over Friday.
