Pensioner  recovering from fire injuries        14/8/12

An elderly pensioner is receiving treatment in hospital after being badly burnt when her bed caught fire.

83-year-old Mary Ann Macdonald of Burnside Cottage in Claddach Kyles on North Uist was airlifted by helicopter to the Dr MacKinnon Memorial Hospital at Broadford on Skye.

It is understood she has serious injuries to her legs and there was earlier consideration of flying her onward to specialist medical attention in a Glasgow hospital.

A police spokesman earlier said she was in a critical condition when rushed for medical treatment but later stabilised.

The housebound woman was injured after her bedding went on flames in her bedroom in the family home she shares with her three adult sons.

Her son Donald, a former postal worker, heard her shouting from outside. He rushed in and extinguished the flames.

Fire crews  from Lochmaddy and Benbecula  were called to the fire in the two storey detached house after the alarm was raised around 6.30pm on Saturday evening.

The bed frame and a nearby chair was burnt while a square metre of flooring in the room was also damaged.

A detective from Northern Constabulary yesterday joined a colleague from the Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service to probe the cause of the fire.

It is believed they were examining the possibility of Mrs Macdonald smoking in bed.
