Man killed by car in island accident           9/6/13

A man has died after being hit by a car in North Uist.

Police said the accident occurred around 1.46am this morning on the road between Clachan and Carinish.

A police spokesman said: “A 33-year-old man was treated by paramedics but unfortunately died at the scene of the collision.

“The road is still closed at this time and will remain closed for several hours until the Divisional Road Policing Unit can complete their investigations.”

It is understood the man may have been at the nearby Carinish Hall where a function had been taking place.

The road between Clachan and Carinish has been closed since then.

There are no alternative diversions available along this part of the the main route through the Uists.

Queues of vehicles have been left on both approaches to accident location.

A road traffic investigation team from Dingwall is travelling to the accident scene.

The road will remain shut for “several hours” said police on Sunday afternoon.
