Construction work on the new £8 million North Uist primary school is on schedule to allow the first pupils to move in next summer.

The building is due to be handed-over to the Comhairle in July.

The modern education facility at Bayhead will be a centralised campus to replace the present Lochmaddy, Paible and Carinish primary schools.

A Comhairle update report says costs are within budget.

The structural steelwork and sub-structure blockwork, including the laying of concrete floor slabs, roof sheeting, and external works are now complete.

A focus was put on filling to required levels and drainage works.

Work will now start on the above-ground blockwork, internal blockwork and partitions, and the installation of curtain walling and windows.

Initial stages of building services installation are also to get underway.

Unlike the Private Finance Initiative schools at Daliburgh and in Lewis and Harris, the maintenance and facility management of Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath will be undertaken in-house by the Comhairle.

This includes the day to day janitorial and cleaning operations as well as school lets.
