The new North Uist primary school has open its doors for its first cohort of pupils.

Sgoil Uibhist a’ Tuath has been handed-over to the Comhairle after construction was completed on time and within budget by contractors, Robertson Group.

Children will enrol on Thursday.

The modern education facility at Bayhead is a centralised campus replacing three primary schools on the island.

Lochmaddy, Paible and Carinish primary schools have now closed.

Unlike the Private Finance Initiative schools at Daliburgh and in Lewis and Harris, the maintenance and facility management of Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath will be undertaken in-house by the Comhairle.,

The total cost of the new school campus is just under £9 million, made up of £2.2 million from Scottish Government and £6.6 million by the Comhairle.

Cllr Catriona Stewart, chair of education and children’s services said: “I am delighted that this phase of the project has been completed. T

"We are confident that staff and children will benefit from this excellent education facility which provides childcare, early years and primary education to the North Uist community in partnership with Saoghal Beag Nursery.”

The school will also provide a resource for community activities.

An official ceremony to celebrate the opening will be held later in the year.
