South Uist buyout “debacle should ring alarm bells” for northern neighbours 16/5/14

Sir,

Reading your report regarding the public meeting at Paible to discuss the councillors’ buyout of North Uist estate, it should be enough that the people have rejected the proposal put forward by the elected councillors for North Uist and Benbecula.

They have been elected to represent the people on council matters - are they out of their depth to force a ballot on the people so that they can get the results that they desire for their own agendas?

Surely any resident with an iota of common sense has seen the debacle of a community buyout on the neighbouring island of South Uist, that itself should set alarm bells ringing.

I do not understand the misguided councillors when they declare that the community is missing out on inward investment.

Surely two expensive landcourt actions that the South Uist community landlord lost against a fellow crofter, and as far as residents are allowed only loans from various bodies to the tune of £16 million that has to be paid back?

Hastily erected wind turbines that have no grid connection except through a third party, a pithy income.

Is this the vision that the North Uist councillors see for their voters?

Swapping Earl Granville’s management for a committee? Committees don’t work - everybody in a crofting township can tell you that.

Angus A Macdonald,

20 Balivanich,

Benbecula
