Last week, Western Isles SNP MP, Angus MacNeil, wrote to NHS Western Isles as well as the Health Secretary regarding the out-of-hours healthcare service in Harris.

The community of North Harris are concerned over the changes as doctors have opted out of providing urgent evening and night visits.

The health board is now responsible for providing after-hours care which is centralised in Stornoway.

Angus MacNeil MP said: “There is no doubt that patients who are registered with the North Harris Medical Practice are anxious about these changes, particularly given the topography of the islands.

“When medical assistance is required, a journey from Harris to Lewis is obviously daunting and I have raised these concerns with NHS Western Isles and the Cabinet Secretary for Health.”

Mr MacNeil added: “I welcome the fact that the Scottish Government has recently announced a review on out-of-hours care in Scotland and I hope this will lead to a rethink on the part of NHS Western Isles.”

Health Secretary Shona Robison said a review of access to urgent medical care services outwith normal GP surgery hours will look at requirements for services at night and the weekends.
